We have now relined our water pipes along Upper Street, Islington High Street and Essex Road. We are currently completing our final tests ahead of putting the new pipes in service. Once the work is finished, the pipes will be much stronger and will ensure that we provide a top quality service.
We will be working extended hours to complete the work as quickly as possible. Our working hours are Monday to Saturday from 7.30am to 10.30pm (between 8:30pm and 10:30pm less noisy activity) and Sundays from 9.30am to 2.30pm. We will do our best to keep noise levels to an absolute minimum.
How long will it take?
We are working on Upper Street, Islington High Street and Essex Road. Our machines have been set up to take samples and flush the pipes in preparation of putting the new pipes in service. We will soon be carrying out work to install a fire hydrant on Upper Street and complete our final re-instatement work. Our work is due to be complete by Tuesday 31 October when the A1 Upper Street and Islington High Street will reopen to through traffic.
How you’re affected?
We will be installing a double fire hydrant on Upper Street outside RBS bank. To assist with our work from Saturday 21 October for approximately 1 week there will be a lane closure to the outside lane on Upper Street between Liverpool Road and Duncan Street. The bus stops outside RBS bank will be closed during this time and re-located outside The York on Upper Street, south of Duncan Street. Please see on street signage for alternative bus stops.
From Thursday 26 October for approximately 3 days a separate contractor will be taking over the current Thames Water site on Upper Street and Islington High Street to carry out crane activities for RBS Bank. Working collaboratively will prevent the need for further disruption once our work is complete. This work is weather dependant and could take longer than 3 days should weather permit.
Temporary traffic lights are in place on Essex Road to maintain two-way traffic until the end of October. Footpaths and pavements will not be affected, so please continue to visit the high street, shops and businesses which are all open as usual.
Islington High Street between the Angel Station and City Road will continue to be closed to southbound traffic until Tuesday 31 October whilst we carry out our final re-instatement work. Diversion signs are in place. Roads will be open northbound as usual. For travel advice visit www.tfl.gov.uk/upper-street-works
Southbound bus services will be temporarily diverted on Upper Street, Islington High Street and Essex Road. Bus route 30 on Upper Street and 476 on Essex Road will be maintained as well as northbound services. Please see the map overleaf to see where to catch your bus.
A free shuttle bus service, 530, will run daily from 06:00 – 23:59 between stop M on Holloway Road and Angel tube station. It will call at all southbound stops on Holloway Road and Upper Street. Visit www.tfl.gov.uk/upper-street-works for further information and travel advice.
